Common Snapping Turtles

(such as Jeremiah)

The common snapping turtle is found throughout the United States.  Known for its stubborn disposition and affinity for snapping not only at food, but at anyone or anything that disturbs them, these turtles are to approached with great caution!  Snapping turtles can grow quite large, with some powerful enough to take off fingers (or worse) in a single snap.  Fortunately, most snapping turtles prefer to avoid contact with humans, and will only leave the depths of ponds and lakes in relative secrecy, preferring not to sun themselves in open view the way many other pond turtles do.
